10:00-11:30 Breakout Session I

A.       Infant/Toddler Sign Language: In just one workshop, you can learn 50 child-relevant American Sign Language (ASL) signs to use for communication with infants and toddlers while they are still too young to speak. Babies as young as 6-36 months can learn and use basic signs as a means of expressing their needs. Frustration and temper tantrums generally decrease and caregivers are relieved from the burden of playing “20 questions” each time a child cries or whines. Research indicates that children who learn sign language as infants or toddlers have greater verbal, reading and writing skills later in life and any age child will LOVE to sign! This workshop, featured on national and local TV stations is taught by Denise Meyers, from Signing with Babies.

B.     Setting Up Your Environment for Success: This workshop is designed to help the provider set up an educational environment that is specific to the age of the children in your care (Infant-toddler, preschool only, Multi-age care, School-age care). The provider will be given tips on storage, space, toys and equipment, and marketing. This class is part of the Essential Elements Training Program offered by MLFCCA and the presenter is Terri Hoffman, MLFCCA Training Coordinator.

12:30-2:00 Breakout Session II

C.     Children, Science and Nutrition: If you participate in a CACFP, this workshop qualifies as your required Food Program Training. A separate certificate will be provided for your Food Program Sponsorship. This creative class will bring together nutrition and the discovery based learning that science offers children. Opportunities for learning are all around us. By engaging our senses in the fun, the discovery is endless. You will have the opportunity to actively participate in the science activities you can do with the children in your care that emphasize fun, participation, continued exploration and healthy eating habits. This workshop is presented by Cathy Johnson, Nutrition Consultant for MLFCCA

D. Glorious Goop: Kids love messes and so will you after you learn these great painting techniques, wonderful recipes and other super ideas. Learn new ideas, share some of your own and try many hands-on projects at various stations. Painting, play dough, bubbles, gak and flubber are just a few of the recipes and ideas waiting for you in the Glorious Goop  workshop offered by Joan Berntson of Back 2 Basics 4 Kids.
