Workshops:

Keynote:  Dr. Michael Obsatz - "Raising Nonviolent Children in a Violent World"
Causes of violent behavior in children and adolescents, and how to teach them peace-making and interpersonal skills.  Dr. Michael Obsatz is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, and has taught there for 36 years.  In addition to teaching, Dr. Obsatz facilitates workshops all over the world, leads men's and boys' support groups and has authored hundreds of articles.  "Raising Nonviolent Children in a Violent World" received the 1999 Minnesota Book Award and the 1999 Catholic Press Association Award.

Session I - 10:00 to 11:30 am

A.  If You Don't Know What to Expect, You Can't Expect to Know - Methamphetamine Use & Abuse
Michael George, High School Teacher, works with youth struggling with addiction; presents to teachers and parents on this drup epidemic.  This workshop focuses on methamphetamines and related drugs.  Learn signs and symptoms of use, how Meth is used, what Meth looks like, and how it destroys the body and brain.  View real examples of Meth and paraphernalia.  One helper or significant other may attend this class only at no cost.  Individual certificates on hand.

B.  Children's Activity
This session is for the children whose parents are attending the Meth workshop.  Supervised, age appropriate activities will be offered.  Registration of the children is recommended.  Must be 3 years and older.

C.  Building Parent Partnerships... and Educating Parents Too!
Vicki Thrasher Cronin, parent educator and former provider.  Child care providers have more regular, ongoing connections with parents than any other community professional.  Learn how to use the "points of contact" as opportunities to strengthen your relationship with parents using their child's development as the key focus.  We'll have a lot of fun!

D.  Practical Discipline Strategies for the Young Child
Nancy Kaczrowski, ECFE teacher and former provider.  This interactive workshop will provide the blueprint to build, starting with a firm foundation, a solid structure of genuine guidance and appropriate actions for balancing all behaviors, creating smiling self images of success.

E.  More than an Ounce of the Ounce Scale
Mary Scott, trainer and former ECFE parent educator.  Have you already attended training on how to use the Ounce Scale and still have some questions about using the materials?  Do you have some great ideas to share with other providers about how you have made Ounce a successful part of your childcare setting?  Come and discuss highlights and challenges of implementing the Ounce Scale and see how the separate elements of Ounce are being used across Minnesota to enhance early child and education settings.

F.  Skills Children Learn in Family Child Care
Kay Billings, education consultant and former provider.  We often hear, "What are my children learning in childcare? All they do is play and watch television."  Ways that you can enhance children's learning will be discussed along with examples of activities for you and the children.

G.  Get on the Move with Coach Julie
Julie Kalleberg, licensed physical education teacher and coach.  Coach Julie involves participants to collaborate, create, and teach a children's activitiy or game with the emphasis on fitness and movement.  Learn new games and share your techniques and activity strategies.

H.  Bullied to Death
Dr Michael Obsatz.  Lets focus on the nature of bullying among children and adolescents.  We will examine why kids bully, how kids are affected by bullying, how to help the victims and the bullies, how to turn bystanders into interveners, and how to create a bullyproof environment.  Empowerment qualities will be stressed with emphasis on healthy personal power, power for others, and power with others rather than power over others.

I.  Find Your Focus with Brain Gym
Cindy Goldade, Brain Gym© Instructor and Montessori teacher.  Are you or your children operating in "survival mode"?  Is reacting the norm?  Learn Brain Gym© Lengthening Activities (physical movements) to experience an integrated mind-body and reduce stress.

J.  Children, Science, and Nutrition
Cathy Johnson, MLFCCA Nutritionist.  This creative class brings together nutrition and discovery-based learning that science offers children.  Opportunities for learning are all around us.  By engaging our senses in the fun, the discovery is endless.  This class meets all food program training requirements.

K.  Effective Negotiation Skills for Providers with Difficult Parents
Julia Talone, education consultant and former provider.  This workshop will provide participants with effective negotiation skills that give the parents what they want; providers, what they need; and the child, what they crave: stability.  This session will build confidence and skill in negotiating win-win outcomes in an effort to resolve parent-provider conflict.

L.  Dollars for Degrees, Scholarships for School:  What TEACH and REETAIN Can Do for You.
Katy Chase, MNCCR&R.  This workshop has two components:  1. Show practitioners how they can attain a scholarship to attend college or to help pay for a CDA assessment fee.  It will delineate the process of how practitioners can have supplemental income once they have achieved a degree or CDA.  2. Report on the successes of the programs and how hey will continue to benefit the state.

M.  The ever-Changing Infant and Toddler
Vickie Vavra, trainer and experienced provider.  We will discuss ideas and techniques on handling situations with infants and toddlers (diapering, separations, transitions, feeding, and guiding behavior).  Share your ideas on parent partnerships and your environment.

N.  Including Children with Aspergers in Early Childhood Programs
Project Exceptional.  Join this informative session to learn more about Aspergers Syndrome in young children.  We will discuss how Aspergers Syndrome differs from Autism, even though both are part of Autism Spectrum Disorder.  Strategies for including children with Aspergers will be given and resources for early childhood providers and families seeking referrals.

Session III - 3:00 to 4:30 pm

O.  Allergies, Asthma, Sinus Problems, Food Allergies, Cough:  What You Need to Know.
Pramod Kelkar, MD.  It is important for childcare providers to learn about common allergies, asthma, and food allergies in their role in early recognition adn overall management of these disease entities.  This educational session will provide the necessary information and tools to manage these common problems in childcare settings.  Dr Kelkar is the co-chair of the Metro Asthma Coalition.

P.  Do Emotions Rule the Day?
Cindy Goldade, Brain Gym© Instructor and Montessori teacher.  Discover the impact of the mid-brain (emotions) on your mental and physical environment.  Experience Brain Gym Energy Exercises as a means to balance emotions, feel centered and grounded while reaching mind-body integration.

Q.  Must-Have Tools for a Healthy Business.
Tosca Grimm & Charissa Banov, Development Corp for Children.  What tools can help you successfully manage your childcare business?  Why is a business plan important, and why do you need a cash flow to better manage your money?  With these tools in hand, and some hands-on practice during this workshop, providers can confidently apply information and create plans that lead to a healthy, thriving childcare business.

R.  Experiential Learning in Early Childhood
Charlotte Nitardy, Metropolitan State University.  Getting credit for what you know!  Individuals such as family child care providers, preschool teachers, or any other profession that serves children and their families can learn how their experience and knowledge in areas such as child development, early childhood curriculum, child health, safety, and nutrition can be assessed for college credit.

S.  Making Your Learning Experience Fun
Vickie Vavra, trainer and experienced provider.  We will discuss new techniques in all areas of learning, and how children of differing ages and stages may use the same materials to learn at their individual levels.  Bring your creative ideas to make learning centers exciting and fun.

T.  H.E.L.P. Book
Beth Mork, Director MLFCCA, author, former provider.  The HELP Curriculum Guide was designed by MLFCCA to aid family child care providers in planning a monthly curriculum that allows caregivers to incorporate sensory activities and everyday living experiences into their curriculum in a fun, easy way.  Come and experience why this guide is in MLFCCA's product line by popular request.  One participant will receive their own "HELP Guide" for attending.

U.  Minnesota Quality Rating System
Q.R.S. Taskforce Member. Most Minnesota providers have heard Q.R.S. being talked about, but aren't sure what the Q.R.S. is or if they could benefit from it.  We will describe what the Q.R.S. is, who can participate, and what benefits there are in a quality ratings system.
