Dr. Verna Cornelia Simmons is an educator, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, author, personal coach, college professor and organizational consultant. Her professional experience includes work as a preschool teacher, 5-6th grade teacher, program director, elementary school principal, intern, senior marketing manager, assistant dean of women, director of leadership programs, and college professor. She has just published a book entitled The Power of People: Four Kinds of People Who Can Change Your Life. This book is a provocative read that puts you on a journey to discover your personal power and ability to positively influence your life and world.

Jim Bjorgan (Adults & Children’s Alliance), An overview of liability issues, insurance requirements, and misconceptions faced by family child care providers.

When Parents or Caregivers Overindulge
Jean Illsley Clarke (Educator / Author) will lead an informational session on wyas children like to receive unconditional love and how overindulgence differs from love.

Celebrate Good Times
Julie Torkelson (Educator) will give ideas to help create lasting memories by sharing songs, ideas, and activities to enhance math & literacy skills for young children.

The ABC’s of Infant Care Are Not ABC’s
Phyliss Porter (Center Infant Educator) will share some answers about how to know what infants need and haw we cater to them.

Risky Business
Cathy Johnson from Minnesota Providers’ Nutrition Network will show how common food-borne illnesses can cause major problems in a child care environment. E-coli, Listeriosis, Salmonellosis, and Staphylococcus all add up to Risky Business. Join in reviewing food program guidelines.

Sue Conant (Family Child Care Professional) will show you ways to enhance your business and environment by making a digital camera a must in your child care.

Bridging Education & Mental Health in Early Childhood
Christopher Watson & Judy K. Swanson (Training Coordinators, Univ. of MN) will help you understand and be able to address the full range of social and emotional needs in young children.

Movement And Brain Development
Catherine Burns (Infant Dev. Movement Educator) will introduce you to specific movements that organize the child’s brain and body in the 1st year of life and will demonstrate simple activities and applications for providers and parents.

Child Abuse Prevention Efforts in MN
Heidi Hagel (Director of Family Support Services) will highlight innovative prevention strategies used by families, caregivers, and organizations across the state.

Intergenerational Mentoring

Claudia Freund will provide basic info on credential options and the steps to obatining either.

Music For The Kid In You
Penny Andrist and Gail Benson will teach you about love, music, and movement in this active session as they share ideas and encourgement to include music in your day.

The Power of Communication & Listening
Vickie Vavra (Family Child Care Professional) will teach you the 5 C’s of communication as she identifies the ways we communicate and the most challenging situations between caregivers and parents.

 

Banquet Keynotes: Penny Andrist & Gail Benson ...are called the Dynamic Duo. Penny and Gail have been in the kid-biz for years, first as teachers in public schools and now as professional speakers and entertainers. Their unique background in education and entertainment enables them to genuinely reach children in both meaningful and playful ways. Together they have created songs, stories, and characters that children readily relate and respond to with the truest kid-like enthusiasm. Penny and Gail have been performing as a team since 1990. They have written and recorded five albums of award-winning music and video as Kids Kollectibles, perform over 120 shows per year and are popular presenters for both youth and adult workshops. In their spare time... they can often be found writing songs, scripts, and curriculum for other groups.
