Data: Minnesota Counts on Child Care.... Thanks to the Minnesota Child Care Resource and Referral Network for providing you with a copy of Minnesota Counts On Child Care, a county-by-county compilation of data on the status of child care. Most of the data was taken from the CCR&R data base, the most complete and updated data base of over 16,000 licensed family child care providers and centers in our state. CCR&R staff also track data on parent requests, providing child care referrals for over 41,000 families in 1999. Over 339,000 parents, providers and community members called CCR&Rs from July 1999 to June 2000 with questions ranging from what to look for in a quality program, managing the parent/provider relationship, options for paying for child care, starting a child care program, and options for staying home to care for a baby. Our data as of 10-2002 shows that there are 274,221 licensed spaces for the 562,120 children under twelve whose parents are in the workforce. 45% of surveyed parents using CCR&R services told us they had problems finding care because there were no openings for the ages of their children. The supply of care for babies and toddlers is particularly short in most areas of the state. 36% of surveyed parents couldn't find care because of the location and lack of transportation. We invite you to read the pages for the counties you represent. If you have questions, please contact the state CCR&R Network office at 651-290-9704 or email: CCR&R Network. Partnering with child care providers has become a reality for many Minnesota families. We hope the information in Minnesota Counts on Child Care will help policy makers respond to the rapid changes that are impacting family life and how children are growing up. The fact that children's earliest learning experiences shape them for life should inform discussions about the availability and affordability of quality child care. Minnesota's families need a child care system that they can access, afford and trust. Minnesota's children need an early care and education system that partners with parents to ensure that every child is prepared for success in school and life.
