Minnesota Licensed Family Child Care Advocate of the Year Award 2006
Maureen Hams

Honored at the banquet was Maureen Hams of East Grand Forks, MLFCCA's 2006 Child Care
Advocate of the Year.

Maureen received a degree in Early Childhood Education from Moorhead State University and then worked in Small World Early Learning Center for six years as infant, toddler and preschool teacher.

Maureen says her work is about providing support and assistance to child care providers–
staff in child care centers and family child care providers, as well as assistance to parents
looking for childcare. As evidence of this, she was instrumental in helping the family child care
providers in her area start their own licensed family child care association. They nominated
her for the 2006 MLFCCA Advocate of the Year Award and surprised Maureen by coming
without her knowledge and appeared magically at the back of the banquet room, cheering when Maureen was called to the podium to receive her award.

Maureen has worked at Tri-Valley Opportunity Council for 17 years, holding a variety of positions that support child care providers. In her community, Maureen sits on two parent advisory committees, one concerning children with special needs and the other, children with mental health concerns. She is also co-leader for her daughter’s Girl Scout troops and her son’s Sunday School class teacher.

Her three children, Ethan 11, Jocelyn 10, and Arizona 7, “are the reason I do what I do. I am hopeful I can make their world a little bit better” and she credits her husband Steve for being a great support and wonderful father to their children.

Congratulations, Maureen!
