Advocate of the Year...

Mr. Jim Eyers
was the first recipient of the Child Care Advocate of the Year Award which began in celebration of MLFCCA's 25th Anniversary and the tenth year of annual conferences. Jim, a Licensor from Anoka County, was instrumental in establishing the First Annual Week of the Family Child Care Conference and Banquet. He has also been a strong advocate for children and family child care providers throughout his career.

Mr. Tom Copeland, J.D.
was our second recipient and received his award at the luncheon ceremonies on October 10. Mr. Copeland has devoted his working career to the research, instruction, and implementation of child care issues. Mr. Copeland was nominated by several groups this year; thus we are sure of his statewide and, even national, popularity as an important resource for family child care providers. Mr. Copeland is currently the Director of the Redleaf Institute in St. Paul. He has authored several family child care business guides and writes an annual tax workbook that is a bible for many of us. Not only has he authored books, taught many classes, guided many, but Tom has personally gone to bat for providers who were being audited by the IRS. He authored legislation in 1996 in Minnesota that addressed the problem of the unavailability of homeowner's insurance for providers.

Ms. Naomi (Tutti) Sherlock Tutti is the Executive Director of .....

Ms. Estelle Griffen is the fourth individual to recieve this award.  She has made a long and lasting impression on the field of family child care in Minnesota through her foresight and dedication in helping set many of the standards used for licensing family child care.  Also, her work in creating and promoting the Minnesota Competency Based Credential (CBTA) has shown her belief and support for the profession of family child care.

Ms Mary Bernard Pabst is our honoree as Advocate of the Year for 2001!  We are proud to recognize such an individual to receive our fifth annual award.  Ms. Mary Bernard Pabst has made a long and lasting impression on the field of family child care.  She is a sincere advocate of family child care and works towards educating others on it’s behalf.
