2005 Child Care Advocate of the Year
In 1997 MLFCCA began honoring a special Child Care Advocate of the Year Award to one individual or organization who has demonstrated dedication to the family child care field in an extraordinary manner. This includes, but is not limited to, demonstrated outstanding advocacy for the family child care field, extraordinary service to MLFCCA, or a lifetime commitment to the child care field. The Child Care Advocate of the Year Award has become an annual tradition at our Week of the Family Child Care Conference and Recognition Banquet.. MLFCCA is pleased to announce that Roxy Churchna is our 2005 Child Care Advocate of the Year! Roxy owns Roxy's Foods & Crafts, a business that supplies family child care providers with nutritional foods, curriculum, and craft kits for the children in their care. Roxy runs her company with the help of Ron (her husband of 42 years), their son, and daughter-in-law; she also employs two former child care providers. Roxy has two other children and five grandchildren. From 1980 to 1987 Roxy was an Albert Lea family child care provider. While a provider, she organized the “We Save Family Child Care” committee to work with fire marshals and avoid mandatory sprinkler systems in family child care homes. She also worked for Quality Child Care and enrolled over 350 providers into that Child & Adult Care Food Program. Roxy saw a need for providers to take better care of themselves. While a food program representative and during her early business endeavors, her efforts produced the birth of the first Pamper the Provider Conference. Roxy developed workshops that focused on “women’s issues” as well as much-needed provider business skills. She encourages providers to be professional in their work with children, their parents, and their peers through her business and her workshops. On the Roxy’s Food and Crafts website numerous tip sheets are available which address issues of concern to providers and Roxy encourages providers to call her if they have a problem. Roxy has mentored many child care associations across the state, including MLFCCA. She has a “provider help fund” to aid providers who are struggling due to financial or medical problems, and has offered free food, substitute child care, or cash when needed. Roxy Chuchna personally and professionally assists approximately 7,000 women yearly in achieving their own economic success and prosperity; many providers say they don’t know what they would do without her. We would like to thank Roxy for all the work she does for family child care providers.
